Determining content and organization requirements for your site |
What are the two most
critical questions to ask when designing a corporate site? All
critical decisions flow from these two questions: What are our
objectives for the site? and Who is our audience for the site? Before undertaking any design work, think through your objectives and your audience. This process should ideally include everyone in the organization who will be or could be effected by the site or who is expected to use or benefit from the site. Mining this in-house information will put you in a better position to make optimal content and organization decisions. Keeping your objectives and audience(s) in mind from the outset will keep you on track throughout the design process. The actual organization of your site also needs to be engineered working backward from objectives and audience parameters. Using principles of Information Architecture your site can be designed to capture the best flow for your users. These parameters will provide guideposts as you go through the design process. Design of complex sites (or even simple sites) needs to focus on functionality. Design should serve the objectives of the site and the users of the site. Impressive graphics and state-of-the-art programming pay off most when coupled with an understanding of information architecture and clear organizational objectives.
